European Voluntary Service (EVS)

"The European Voluntary Service (EVS) provides young Europeans with the unique chance to express their personal commitment through unpaid and full-time voluntary activities in a foreign country within or outside the EU. In this way, it seeks to develop solidarity, mutual understanding and tolerance among young people, thus contributing to reinforcing social cohesion in the European Union and to promoting young people's active citizenship."

Balkan Peace Park: Environment connecting Youth across Borders

Our EVS volunteers came to work with ERA for 10 weeks this summer from Germany (Janun e.V.), Bulgaria (Tradiational Culture and Sustainable Development-TCSD), Italy (Associazione Interculturale NUR), Lithuania (Psychological Creative Youth Centre-PCYP), and Poland (Youth Development and Integration Association - STRIM).

Group EVS (2009, 10 weeks)

"The Balkan Peace Park" a short-term group EVS project brought together 5 youth with fewer opportunities from Germany, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, and Bulgaria for an intercultural and environmental learning experience in the cross-border region known as the Balkan Peace Park (BPP). This group EVS focused on bridging the divide between the youth of Europe across borders, and overcome stereotypes and prejudices that may separate them. The proposed trans-boundary protected area where the volunteers spent their 10 weeks lies between Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania, where mutual understanding is necessary for everything, including the environmental protection of the shared natural and cultural landscape that transcends borders. The volunteers were hosted in the city of Peja, Kosovo. During their time in ERA, the volunteers had the opportunity to experience the diverse cultures of all communities that make up the mountainous border region. The volunteers spent their time working with an international team in an NGO capacity on a variety of projects that involved increasing and promoting trans-boundary mountain sustainable development. Intercultural learning is integral to the BPP cross-border cooperation, and this group EVS was structured to be a self-development opportunity for the volunteers to learn and grow themselves, as well as through exchange with local youth and internationals working in Kosovo.

Individual EVS (2010, 12 months)

As a follow-up to the group EVS organized in 2009, ERA received one EVS volunteer from Finland for long-term volunteer project, from January 2010 to January 2011. The volunteer worked as an integral part of ERA team in various projects.
